First of all this time of year is whale season (Dec.-May) and to reach Lanai you must cross a channel teeming with whale activity. Regulations do not permit anyone to operate within 100 yards of a humpback whale, this means that if one pops up closer than that we are forced to shut down our engines. This may sound like an inconvenience, but be assured there is nothing like being eye to eye with a humpback and nothing but lapping waves and myriad whale noises. As we get closer to the Island of Lanai we are usually greeted by the local pods of spinner and spotted dolphins. The are very playful and often ride in the wake of our bow. Occasionally we also see the more elusive bottlenose dolphins.
